Does that one vertical wrinkle between or just above your eyebrows bother you? Many people recognise that frown line: a deep vertical streak in the forehead that makes you look angrier, tenser or more tired than you feel. Good news: this is one of the most rewarding areas to treat subtly. On this page you'll read how a vertical forehead wrinkle forms, how a treatment with Botox calms the underlying muscle, and what you can realistically expect. Honest, medically grounded and always focused on a natural result that suits you.

The vertical wrinkle you see between or just above your eyebrows is called the frown line or glabellar line. It is caused by the muscles you contract when you frown, squint, or concentrate. Every time you make that movement, the skin folds in the same place. Over time, that crease remains visible, even when your face is relaxed.
Because the wrinkle runs vertically, it often stands out: it draws attention to the center of your forehead and can give you a gloomy or stern expression. Many people report that others ask them if they are angry or tired, when they are not at all. That is exactly the effect of such a deep frown line.
A vertical forehead wrinkle is primarily a dynamic wrinkle. This is important, because as long as the wrinkle mainly appears during movement, it is easy to relax. A wrinkle that is deeply etched even in complete rest sometimes requires a different or additional approach.
For a vertical frown line, we typically use Botox. With a few small, targeted injections, we relax the muscle that causes the wrinkle. The muscle contracts less forcefully, so the skin above it folds less and the vertical line gradually softens.
The goal is explicitly not to completely freeze your forehead. You should still be able to raise your eyebrows and have normal facial expressions. We look for the right dosage so that your frown becomes calmer, but your face remains yours. Subtle and respectful, that is the starting point.
For a wrinkle that is already very deep in the skin, Botox can stop the movement while a fine residual line may remain visible. In some cases, we then discuss whether an additional approach makes sense. During a consultation, we honestly assess what is achievable in your situation.
This treatment is well suited for those who are bothered by a vertical frown line that appears or deepens with movement, and who want a calmer, more open look without it seeming overdone. Often these are people who notice that their frown makes them look older or sterner than they feel.
Sometimes it is better not to treat, or not yet. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, we never treat. Botox is also not suitable with certain muscle or nerve disorders, or with an active skin infection in the area. If you have unrealistic expectations, such as a wrinkle that completely and permanently disappears, we tell you honestly.
If your vertical line is mainly a deep static crease, Botox will calm the movement but will not always completely erase the line. We then openly discuss what is realistic, and if a treatment would add little in your case, we simply advise against it.
Everything starts with a consultation. We look at your forehead at rest and in motion, ask what exactly bothers you and what you expect. Based on that, we propose whether a treatment of the frown line is meaningful and which approach suits you best.
The treatment itself is short. After determining the injection points, we inject several small amounts of Botox into the frown muscle with a fine needle. Most people find this well tolerated: a brief prick per point. An appointment usually does not take long and you can then just continue your day.
Afterwards, you receive clear aftercare instructions, such as not massaging or pressing on the area, waiting 3 to 4 hours before exercising and avoiding the sauna on the day itself. If desired, we schedule a follow-up moment so we can assess the result together and fine-tune if necessary.
The effect comes on gradually. The first change you usually notice after a few hours to 3 days, while the full result develops over about two weeks. Your vertical frown line becomes softer and your expression looks calmer and more open.
The result is temporary. After several months, the muscle movement gradually returns and the wrinkle becomes more visible again. How long the effect lasts varies from person to person and depends, among other things, on your muscle strength and how strongly you frown. Many people choose to repeat the treatment when they feel the movement returning.
A nice side effect: because you train the area less, the wrinkle may eventually become somewhat less deep with repeated treatments. However, it remains a maintenance treatment and not a one-time, permanent fix. We tell you this beforehand so you can make an informed choice.
Botox in the frown area is a widely performed, well-studied treatment. Yet every injection deserves an honest account of side effects. Temporarily, you may experience slight redness, a prickly sensation, or a bruise at an injection point. Sometimes a headache or a light heavy feeling occurs, which goes away on its own.
More rarely, an eyebrow or eyelid may temporarily drop slightly if the product spreads differently than intended. This is transient and resolves spontaneously. Thoughtful technique, the right dosage, and a good assessment of your anatomy help to keep this risk small. That is why we attach great importance to that first consultation.
The price of a treatment depends on what is needed in your situation, such as the area and the amount of product. We do not work with hidden costs: during the consultation you receive an honest estimate, so you can decide calmly and well-informed.
