Does that vertical line between your eyebrows bother you, because it makes you look angry or tired when you are not? You are not alone. The frown line is one of the most frequently treated areas, and a careful treatment can make your expression look more open and relaxed again. On this page you can read what a frown line is exactly, how a botox treatment of the frown muscles works, who it is and is not suitable for, and how Dr T. approaches it subtly and respectfully so that you still look completely like yourself.

The frown wrinkle is the vertical line (or sometimes two lines, the "11") that appears just above the root of your nose, between your eyebrows. That crease is caused by the muscles you use to frown: every time you concentrate, squint against the light, or worry, those muscles contract.
Initially, the line disappears as soon as your face relaxes. Over time, with aging and thousands of repetitions, the crease remains visible even at rest. The skin has essentially been "folded" into that crease.
The annoying thing about this area is that a deep frown gives you an angry, tense, or tired expression, even when you feel fine. Many people only notice it in a photo or video call.
For the frown wrinkle, we use Botox: a protein that temporarily and precisely relaxes the overactive frown muscles. By calming those muscles, you contract much less in that area and the skin gets a chance to smooth out.
The goal is not to "freeze" your forehead. The goal is for your frown to become softer and your gaze more open, while you can still look natural and your face keeps expression. Subtle and respectful, so no one sees you had something done, but notices you look more rested.
With a light, recent frown wrinkle, the line often largely disappears. With a deeper, etched-in crease, it becomes noticeably softer, but sometimes a fine line remains. We discuss this honestly beforehand, so you know what is realistic.
This treatment is a good fit if your frown wrinkle bothers you, if it makes you look older or stricter, or if you notice the crease remains visible even when your face is relaxed. It can also be useful preventively, to keep a starting line from deepening.
Sometimes Botox alone is not the best choice. With a very deep, static crease that stays deep even in complete rest, a combination with a fine filler or a skin booster may yield more. We assess that together during the consultation.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, we never treat. The treatment is also not suitable with certain muscle or nerve disorders, or if you have an allergy to the substance used. If Botox is not a good idea in your situation, we say so honestly and together look for what is possible, or for no treatment if that is the right answer.
Everything starts with a consultation. Together we look at your frown at rest and in motion, listen to what bothers you, and determine if Botox is the right choice here. You receive honest explanation about what you can and cannot expect.
The treatment itself is short. Using a very fine needle, a few precise points are injected into the frown muscles. Most people experience this as small pinpricks, generally well tolerated without anesthesia. You can continue immediately with your day afterwards.
Afterwards, we ask you not to massage or press on the area, not to exercise for the first 3 to 4 hours and to avoid a bath, sauna or jacuzzi that day. You receive this aftercare clearly, so the product stays nicely in place.
Botox does not work immediately. You usually see the first softening within a few hours to 3 days, the full result after about two weeks. So patience is needed; don't judge your frown the day after treatment.
The effect lasts an average of a few months and then gradually decreases, while your frown muscles slowly become more active again. If you want to maintain the result, you repeat the treatment in time. In those who get treated regularly, the frowning habit often becomes somewhat unlearned.
Sometimes a small touch-up is needed after about two weeks to get the balance just right. That is normal and we discuss it openly, because we aim for a result that fits your face.
Botox in the frown area is a commonly performed treatment with a well-known safety profile, provided it is done by a doctor with knowledge of facial anatomy. That anatomical precision is precisely what distinguishes a natural result from a too tight or asymmetrical effect.
Possible side effects are usually mild and temporary: a small bruise, slight tenderness, or brief headache at the injection site. More rarely, and often linked to placement or dosage, is a temporary heavier feeling of the eyelid or slight asymmetry. This goes away on its own as the product wears off.
Do you have doubts about whether this treatment is right for you? During a consultation, we calmly examine your frown and you receive honest advice. You decide afterwards, without pressure.
