Are you hesitant about lip fillers because you're afraid they'll hurt? That's one of the most frequently asked questions, and it's a valid one. The honest summary: a lip filler treatment is tolerable for most people, not a pleasure but no torture either. The lips are sensitive, but there's a lot we do to keep it comfortable. On this page you'll read exactly what you feel during and after the treatment, why the lips are so sensitive, and how Dr T. in Gent minimizes the pain with numbing, technique and calm. No sugarcoating: what you can really expect.

Your lips are full of fine nerve endings, that's why you feel so much with them and why they are more sensitive than, for example, your cheeks. That's exactly why the question of whether lip fillers hurt comes up so often: it's one of the most sensitive spots on your face.
Good to know is that modern hyaluronic acid-based lip fillers often already contain a numbing agent (lidocaine). This means that the first pricks feel the sharpest, and after that it gets increasingly dull and more bearable as the area becomes numb.
The experience also varies from person to person. Some find it barely noticeable, others find it really bothersome. Your menstrual cycle, fatigue and tension can play a role in how sensitive you are that day.
Most people describe it as a combination of a prick and a pressing or burning sensation, short and localized. It's not continuous pain: you mainly feel the moment of insertion and the filling, with pauses in between.
To keep that comfortable, we apply a numbing cream beforehand and work with fine needles or sometimes a blunt cannula, which limits the number of pricks. During the treatment you can always indicate that you want a break. You stay in control.
Dr T. works calmly and in layers, not rushed. That calmness is not only nice for the result, but also makes the treatment more bearable, because you're not caught off guard and know what's coming.
Right after the treatment your lips may throb, feel sensitive and swollen. That's normal and part of the recovery. Many people find this after-effect very manageable with an optional cold compress in the first hours.
Swelling and sensitivity are usually strongest the first one to two days and then decrease. Bruises can occur, especially in such a highly vascular area, and disappear on their own. Your lips only feel completely like themselves again after a few days.
Important: sharp or increasing pain that doesn't subside is not normal. If you feel that, feel free to contact us so we can take a look. Honest advice and accessibility are part of a safe treatment.
We combine several things: a numbing cream beforehand, a filler with built-in lidocaine, fine needles or a cannula, and a calm layered technique. That combination makes the difference between an unpleasant and a well-tolerated treatment.
Your preparation also helps. Come well-rested, eat something beforehand, and preferably don't come on an empty stomach or with a lot of stress. Avoiding blood-thinning agents or alcohol right before can limit bruising and sensitivity. We discuss this together during your consultation.
What we don't do is promise that you won't feel anything. That would be dishonest. What we do promise is that we do everything we can to keep it comfortable and that you'll never just go through something.
If you're very afraid of needles or very pain-sensitive, that doesn't automatically mean it's impossible, but we do discuss it honestly. Sometimes extra numbing or a calm buildup is the solution, sometimes a different moment or approach is wiser.
An active cold sore (herpes), an inflammation or wound around the lips, or certain conditions can be a reason to postpone the treatment. Also during pregnancy or breastfeeding we don't do lip fillers. We always first check whether it's safe and sensible at that moment.
If we find that a lip filler is not the best choice for you, we say so. Doing nothing or waiting is sometimes the most honest advice, and that fits with how we work: subtle, respectful and without pressure.
Pain is very personal and fear of the needle is a logical reason to hesitate. During a consultation we look together at your sensitivity, your wishes and expectations, and explain exactly how the treatment would go for you.
This way you know in advance what to expect and can calmly decide if it's for you. Want to discuss it? Feel free to schedule a consultation with Dr T. in Gent, we'll take the time for it.

Many people shy away from lip fillers for fear of an artificial look. Biostimulators like Sculptra offer a completely different mechanism. We do not use Sculptra in or around the lips, but in areas such as the cheeks and jawline. Instead of adding volume with a gel, these products stimulate your own collagen production. The result? A gradual firming of the skin that never feels "done". At Dr T., we often combine these techniques with subtle fillers to refine contours, without anyone noticing. Your face remains yours, just fresher and firmer.
