Are you hesitating about lip fillers because you're afraid of a puffy or unnatural result? Very understandable. On this page we honestly explain how your lips look before and after treatment, what's realistic and what's not. At Dr T. in Ghent we consciously choose a subtle and respectful result: just a little more volume, a nicer shape or a more symmetrical line, without anyone noticing you've had anything done. Here's what you can truly expect.

With lip fillers we inject a hyaluronic acid gel into your lips to adjust volume, shape, or definition. The before and after difference is rarely about "much bigger": usually it's a lip that looks fuller, smoother, or more balanced than before. Sometimes the focus is on the arch of your upper lip, sometimes on a thin lower lip or on more symmetry between left and right.
The look right after treatment is not immediately the final result. Your lips are often still a bit swollen, making them feel bigger and firmer than they will eventually be. The real "after" is only visible once that swelling has subsided and the filler has settled nicely.
At Dr T., we first review together what exactly bothers you and what you desire. That way we start from a realistic preview and a result that suits your face, not from a trend you might not like in a year.
Immediately after lip filler injections, mild swelling, redness, and sometimes small bruises are normal. Your lips may appear a bit asymmetrical or "too full" in the first days, precisely because of that swelling. This is temporary and part of recovery; it says nothing yet about your final result.
Most people can go home the same day and continue their day, though we recommend avoiding important appointments or parties right after. Occasionally you may feel small lumps when you rub your lips. These usually smooth out on their own as the filler settles.
Want to make a photo comparison? Then take an honest before photo in neutral light beforehand and wait with the "after" image until the swelling is gone, otherwise you're comparing two moments that aren't comparable.
You get a first impression immediately, but the definitive result is best judged after about two weeks. By then the swelling has disappeared, any bruises are gone, and the filler has nestled into your lips. Only then do you see how your lips truly look at rest and in motion.
If your lip doesn't feel quite balanced after that period, or you wish for a little more, we can make targeted adjustments at a follow-up. It's better to work in small steps than to do too much at once: you can always top up, but taking away is more difficult.
How long the result remains visible varies per person and depends partly on your metabolism and the product used. Lip fillers are not permanent and gradually break down, so to maintain the look a new treatment is needed after a while.
We start with a conversation about what bothers you and what you wish for. Dr T. examines your lips at rest and in motion, assesses the proportion to the rest of your face, and honestly says what is achievable. Sometimes the advice is to do less or nothing, because that suits you better.
Before the treatment we apply a numbing cream, and most fillers also contain a numbing agent themselves. The injection itself usually doesn't take long. We work step by step and continuously check the effect, so we achieve a natural result instead of overcorrection.
Afterwards you receive clear aftercare tips and the option of a follow-up. This way we monitor together how your "after" result develops.
Lip fillers can be appropriate if you want to make thin lips fuller, refine your lip shape, soften asymmetry, or smooth fine lines around the mouth. It's important that your expectations are realistic: the goal is an improved version of your own lips, not a completely different face.
Sometimes it's better to wait or refrain from treatment, for example with an active cold sore, an inflammation or infection around the lips, or with certain conditions and allergies. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, we never treat. During the consultation we go over your situation and medication so we can work safely.
If you're looking for a result that's noticeably large or "photoshopped", we might not be the right choice. We stand for subtle and respectful, and we honestly say so upfront.
The most common side effects are temporary: swelling, tenderness, redness, and small bruises that disappear on their own. Rarer but more serious risks, such as a blocked blood vessel, are honestly discussed beforehand. We use hyaluronic acid fillers because they are in most cases biodegradable or, if necessary, dissolvable.
Always contact us if you notice severe or increasing pain, white discoloration, or other unusual symptoms after treatment. Good follow-up is part of a safe treatment.
The price depends on what your lips need and how much product is used. We don't work with surprises afterwards: during the consultation you get an honest estimate and you decide afterwards whether to proceed. Want to know what's realistic for your lips? Not every lip filler is the same. Hyaluronic acid fillers differ in density, elasticity, and water-attracting capacity. This directly affects how soft or defined your lips feel, and how natural the result looks. We deliberately work with a selection of premium fillers, each serving a specific purpose.
For those especially wanting hydration and a light filling, we use fine, low-viscosity fillers such as Restylane Refyne or Juvederm Volbella. These spread evenly and maintain the natural suppleness of the lip. Ideal for an invisible refinement, no one will see you've had anything done, but everyone will notice you look fresh.
If your lips mainly lack shape and borders, we choose slightly denser formulas such as Restylane Kysse or Juvederm Ultra Smile. With these we accentuate the cupid's bow and lip line without overly enhancing the volume. The art lies in the dosage and injection technique, not in the product alone. At Dr T., we always start from your natural lip shape and build it up subtly, with respect for your unique facial proportions.
The honest answer: most clients find the treatment very tolerable, especially with our preparation. Thanks to the thin needle and gentle injection technique, the discomfort is often minimal. Moreover, all fillers we use already contain lidocaine, a numbing agent that releases during injection and numbs the lip within seconds.
For extra comfort, we apply a strong numbing cream beforehand that works for at least 15 minutes. Optionally, nerve block via a small prick in the corner of the mouth can be considered, though it's rarely necessary. We work slowly, with minimal pressure, and keep constant contact. This way you stay relaxed and we know exactly what you feel.
After the procedure there may be slight tenderness, similar to a bruise. That usually disappears within a day. We give you a cooling pack and clear aftercare advice so you're comfortable quickly.
