Wondering if you're old enough for lip fillers, or questioning whether now is the right time? On this page, you'll discover from what age a lip filler is responsible, why age alone isn't everything, and when waiting is simply the smarter choice. At Dr T. in Ghent, honest advice comes first. Better a calm consultation than a rushed treatment: sometimes the best advice is to wait a little longer, and we're not afraid to tell you.

In Belgium, an aesthetic filler treatment is generally intended only for adults. The legal minimum is 18 years: we do not perform lip fillers on minors without medical necessity. This is not a formality but a safety choice. An aesthetic procedure on a minor carries risks disproportionate to a purely cosmetic goal.
Eighteen is the absolute minimum, not an automatic green light. Being old enough doesn't mean a lip filler is right for you at that moment. During a consultation, we look not only at your age but especially at your motivation, your expectations, and what your lips currently need.
If you're under 18, the honest answer is: a little patience. We will happily discuss what's realistic and when a conversation becomes worthwhile.
Your face and lips continue to change well into young adulthood. In your teenage years and early twenties, proportions are not yet fully developed. A filler that looks good now may fit less well with a face that matures further in a few years. Waiting provides a more stable foundation to build on.
Age also plays a role in the reason behind the desire. Lips that are naturally full at a young age often need little or no filler. For someone who is a bit older, a subtle filler can help restore volume or contour that has diminished over the years. Same product, different purpose.
Important to know: there is no age at which lip fillers suddenly become impossible. A treatment is perfectly possible at a later age, as long as your health and expectations allow it.
Lip fillers suit you if you are 18 or over, in good health, and have a realistic goal: a bit more volume, a nicer contour, or restoring symmetry. A natural and respectful result is always the starting point, not a noticeable change.
Sometimes it's more honest to say no, or to wait a while. For example, with an active cold sore or infection around the lips, or with certain conditions or medications that affect the result or safety. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, we never treat. Also, if your expectations don't match what a filler can realistically achieve, we'd rather discuss that openly than disappoint you.
If you feel pressured, for instance by social media images or by people around you, we take the time for that. A good decision is made calmly, coming from yourself.
It all starts with a conversation, not with a needle. During the consultation, we look at your lips together, listen to exactly what you want, and check your medical background. We honestly discuss what is achievable and what a natural result means for you.
Only when your age, health, and expectations align do we schedule a treatment. If you still have doubts, or if this isn't the right time, there is no pressure at all. You are always free to leave with advice and without treatment.
This calm approach is intentional. Better a well-considered choice than a quick procedure you might later regret.
A lip filler gives immediate visible volume, although it often looks fuller and more swollen in the first few days. After about one to two weeks, the final result can be properly assessed, once the swelling has gone and the filler has settled.
The effect is temporary. Hyaluronic acid fillers are gradually broken down by your body, typically over a period of several months. Exactly how long it lasts varies from person to person. That temporary nature is also reassuring: nothing is forever, and you can always adjust.
The beauty of starting at the right moment is that you can build up gradually. Better to start subtly and possibly touch up later than to do too much at once.
Lip fillers are generally safe when administered by a doctor, but side effects are part of it. Mild swelling, bruising, or sensitivity are normal and usually disappear on their own. We always discuss rarer risks beforehand, so you know what to expect. That's precisely why age and a proper assessment are important.
We are transparent about the price. The cost of a lip filler depends on the amount of product and what your lips need. Quoting an exact figure without having seen you would be misleading. During the consultation, you get an honest estimate tailored to your situation.
If you're unsure whether your age or timing is right, feel free to book a consultation. We'll look together at whether a lip filler fits now, or if waiting is the better choice at this moment. Our approach to all aesthetic treatments prioritizes your well-being over quick decisions.
